Good question. I guess there's kind of a personal and a professional reason- since gay couples can't get married, but often engage in lifelong relationships, they use the term "partner" instead of husband/wife. Using "partner" even though I'm heterosexual is kind of a respect thing. I guess you could call it a PC term. On the personal side, I see so often that relationships fail. To me, the terms "husband" and "wife" don't imply what they used to- which is supposed to be lifelong partnership. Partner, to me, seems to be a better descriptive word of what I want in a relationship. Does that make sense? I hope it helps.
