It's shown that you guys weren't happy in Melbourne. NZ seems like such a nicer place.

It is, and much more of what we want out of a place to live. Melbourne is missing that special quality that I enjoyed so much in NZ, other than the accent it could be any North American city.

I'm relieved to read this. I've recently decided to make a life change that involved a giant Edit → Undo. Still dealing with short-term repercussions, but I feel in my secular soul that I'm doing what's right for me. For you guys to return to a known quantity, where you were happier and had a support system, can't be a bad choice. I'm proud of you and hope that the logistics of getting back where you belong are manageable and quick. Good luck.

Realising that backwards is really forwards is difficult, but the second I set the goal of "back to Auckland" it felt like a weight had been lifted. Even though it'll be some work it feels like the right thing to do.

Excellent, you can board & feed us. In return I'll occasionally cut you and crap on your bed.

It's also just the size of the city, plus we realised how we left so many friends and our support behind.

Also I just prefer Auckland, Melbourne is a flat and ugly wasteland.

Isn't your house on a sizeable hill in Croydon :P?

It is true that Melbourne is relatively flat i.e. it's not san fransisco. But ultimately nobody comes to live in melbourne for the landscape.

Australia has quite a few natural sites to see and you should try see them before you go.
