Don Imus rant

I had never even heard of Don Imus until my roommate walked in my room to tell me that he said the words "Nappy headed ho's" about Rutger's female basketball team. I looked at her confused and responded with "What does that even mean?" We both were in agreement that we had no idea. Next thing I know, Imus is being labeled a racist all over the ( Read more... )

i think it was most definitely a racist (as well as chauvinistic) comment and his firing was completely justified. if it weren't intended as a race joke, i'm certain that he would have clarified that.. we would have heard more of a defense from him if he were unjustifiably taking a fall for a simple misinterpretation. it was racist because that was how he intended it.

he was working for cbs and msnbc, both reputable news organizations who probably shouldn't be paying someone who makes such ignorant comments on the air. also his show was about politics; jokes about politicians and other prominent figures is to be expected.. but a women's basketball team? why would he go out of his way to insult a group of women who were only deserving of praise? it was completely out of line, especially because it wasn't even in the realm of politics.

well of course all they care about is the money, that's all anyone cares about in this country. sure, they report on celebrity news, but isn't it pertinent simply because (sadly) that's what people care about? and i personally don't always trust the news.. but it's the principle of the thing. we have to get our news from somewhere, and wouldn't you like to at least feel like that information is unbiased and valid? how hypocritical would it be to report on civil rights issues and humanitarian efforts while you're paying someone who refers to women as "nappy-headed hos"?
