If God didn't exist no one would be trying to prove that he doesn't exist. Kind of like the whole chair in a room analogy. People don't sit around trying to prove the fact that there is no chair in a room if there is indeed no chair in the room. That would be pointless.
Lives_withabear, to explain more fully (and without intending to eavesdrop), the word "Atheist" itself comes from the Greek word "theos," meaning "god," and the prefix alpha, or, "a," which (even in English) negates the following word. "Atheist," therefore, means simply "without God," which proves Chesterton's point in that if there were no God, one could not possibly be without Him. You can't lack that which you never had.
