Vasopressin (Antidiuretic Hormone, ADH), is the major hormone concerned with regulation of body fluid osmolarity. When the body is deprived of water, blood serum osmolarity increases. This increase is sensed by osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus which in turn propogates signals to secrete ADH. The major action of ADH is to increase water permeability to allow water to be reabsorbed by the collecting ducts of the kidneys and thereby concentrating the urine. Converse to the secretion of ADH, a decrease in serum osmolarity (by drinking enough water) signals the hypothalamic osmoreceptors to inhibit the secretion of ADH. Inhibition of ADH just means that no more new ADH is being released...you still have some in the blood stream and it takes about an hour for it to clear out
