Gerard

I rushed onto the bed and picked up Frank’s head, it was much too dark to see clearly, but what I could make out and was just in so much disbelief to be seeing, he had wings! Right there, big white bloody wings sticking out of his back like some soft of bizarre angel. Even though he was passed out, his skin was twitchy and crawling. It all felt so weird under my fingertips.

“Frank! Come on baby, don’t do this to me now. Wake up!” I shook him, hoping he’d wake. When he didn’t I only shook harder. I feared he had died from the trauma he had just suffered.

Frank clinched the bed sheets, and moved his head only slightly. “Gee…” His pained voiced squeaked. “I’m dying. It hurts so much.”

“No, no I refuse to let you die. You’ll be okay. Just stay with me…Breathe honey.” His breath was wheezy and shaky. His eyes rolled back and he began coughing. He passed out again, I shook him over and over, and nothing happened. He just laid there still like a corpse. “Shit!” I shouted. I ran back into the living room where my stuff was and dug around for my cell phone. I couldn’t possibly call a hospital. How the hell would I explain this? Yes, doctor my boyfriend sprouted wings after I fucked him. I needed help and there’s only one person who could possibly help me.

--

The phone rang within the dark and Ray’s hand emerged from under the covers for his phone. He yawned loudly and grunted to clear his throat before saying anything into the phone. “Do you have any fucking idea of what time it is? I’m not selling shit this time of night asshole. Call in the morning.” Ray was beyond pissed off when his customers tried to call him late at night. He was just about to hang up when he heard someone screaming.

“Ray! You fucking hang up on me I’ll beat the shit out of you!” Gerard yelled into the phone.

Ray sat up in bed, recognizing the voice. He wiped his eyes of sleep and sighed. Ray figured Gerard was in need of another hit to get him through the night again. It wouldn’t be the first time Gerard called him in the middle of the night for his drugs. “Gerard it’s really, really late at night and I’m very tired. You’re just gonna have to wait for a hit in ‘til morning.”

“I don’t fucking need drugs you asshole!” Gerard still screaming into the phone. “I need you to help me! Frank needs help, there’s…god, so much blood here. You need to bring your medical stuff right now!”

“Wait…blood? What the hell happened? Just take him to a hospital.”

“I can’t do that, not for this…get here now!”

“Okay, okay.” Ray got out of bed, turned on the lamp and rushed around his room looking for his medical bag. “Where are you, at home?”

“No, at his house…it’s on the corner of Wilson and Garden Rose. I’ll wait outside for you. Just please get here quick!” Gerard hung up the phone and went back to check on Frank, who was still out cold.

--

Ray came out of Frank’s room covered in blood all over his gloved hands and his shirt. The gloves came off with a snap and he threw them away hastily. Gerard was over near the window watching as the sun rose over the mountains, smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves. He turned quickly when he heard footsteps emerge from Frank’s bedroom.

“Is he okay?” He asked frantically with wide eyes.

Ray nodded and walked into Frank’s kitchen. He cleaned the blood off his medical instruments and put them away in his bag. “Gerard, I gotta ask, where do you meet this people? Is there some kind of club for demons and angels or something?”

“Don’t joke about this. He could’ve died.”

“Yeah, could’ve. There was so much blood loss; it’s not surprising he was out cold through the whole thing.”

“What’s wrong with him?”

“I thought you knew. I mean you’d probably know more about something like this than me, Gerard.”

Gerard shook his head, putting out his cigarette only to light a new one. “No, he just grew them. He was screaming for me and that’s what I saw.”

Ray scratched his head and wiped the sweat from his brow. “God, I’d probably be the most famous medical student in the profession if I told anyone what I saw here.”

“Yes, but you’re not.” Gerard snapped at him.

Ray sighed and looked over at Gerard and folded his arms over his chest. He tried to think of what to say, there was an awkward silence filling the room. The only thing he could think of talking about was Frank. “They were still growing when I tried to stitch him up. The first couple broke right after I put them.” He spoke clearly and direct like any doctor would.

“So you didn’t put anymore stitches in?”

“No, I did. Once the growing stopped.”

“Do you think it’ll happen again? Will he be okay?”

“It’s hard to say really. Without a proper examination, I wouldn’t be able to tell. Once he wakes up we should try to get him to a hospital and do a CAT scan.”

“You know we can’t do that. Look at him! He’ll be on every news station and paper. He’ll become some kind of freak sideshow attraction.” Gerard breathed deep and sucked on his cigarette. He paced around the living room and finally sat down on the arm of the couch quickly.

“I could possibly do an analysis on a feather. Do some blood tests as well…would that be better for you?” Gerard didn’t answer Ray’s question, but he knew it was never meant to be answered and just smoked. “He’ll be out for a few hours, maybe even all day. When he does wake up he’ll definitely be out of it. After that…” Ray began to pack up all his things as he spoke. “…he’ll be in a lot of pain. So you give this.” Ray pulled an unlabeled bottle of pills from the bottle of his medical bag and tossed them to Gerard.

“What are they?” Gerard asked as he examined the bottle.

“My own painkillers, tell him only to take one at a time. I haven’t tested them yet. So don’t take any yourself.” Ray added in that little reminder. Gerard simply rolled his eyes. “I’ll be back to see him when he wakes. You gonna be okay here?”

“Yeah, thanks for coming over and helping him.” He nodded and gave a weak smile.

Ray headed for the door. As he opened it he turned back toward Gerard. “He may know what happened to him. You should get him to talk. And you should change his sheet, unless you want him lying in his own blood all day long. But do it carefully, he could go into shock.” After that Ray left for school.

Frank

My eyes felt so heavy, I couldn’t open them so I gave up trying. And my head, oh god its spinning like crazy. Where am I? The last thing I remember was Gerard with me. I tried to moved, but I feel so heavy, my back especially…Ow! Oh god, so much pain.

I think I remember what happened. I can barely think straight though, but I remember. Something ripped out of my back. The lumps that were there, they felt like they were becoming bigger, growing even. I opened my eyes finally. I felt so sick and disgusting, like complete shit. Trying to move was even harder than trying to open my eyes. I was in my room. I looked around, everything seemed to be fine still but I couldn’t move. I felt too heavy to move.

“Hello? Is anyone there?” I called out, but my voice was so weak. Even if anyone was here, which I doubt, they wouldn’t hear my call.

“Frank?” I heard Gerard’s voice call from the other room. Soon there were footsteps coming my way and there he was. “Hey, I was wondering when you’d wake up. How are you feeling?”

“What happened?” My voice was still so weak and squeaky. “I don’t remember anything. Why do I feel this way?”

He looked at me with so much concern painted on his face. He stroked my cheek with his finger and smiled sweetly at me with troubled eyes. “Last night you somehow sprouted wings.”

“Wings?” I wanted to reach back and feel for myself, but every limb and every muscle in my body was just so weak and motionless. I looked to my side and I could see silvery-white feathers stretched out over the bed. “Oh my god!” I said aloud and actually tried to run away from the wings. Unfortunately they were attached to my back and the second I tried to move the pain shot through me like a bullet. I cried out like a baby and tears filled my eyes.

“Oh honey, no don’t move too much.” Gerard’s hand went into my hair. Even in all this pain, the simple touch of his hand was so comforting. He kneeled down at the edge of the bed. I could see him a lot better now. I didn’t have to move my head up to see him. ‘I called a friend of mine, he put stitches in around the…um wings. I have some painkillers for you to take.” He pulled out a bottle of pills and dropped a few from the bottle into his hand. “I’ll get you some water.” Gerard left the room. I could hear the water from the sink running and then shut off. He came back quickly. He was so sweet to take care of me like this. I’m surprised he didn’t just freak out and run away. He picked up my head and put a pill to my lip, right after that the water and I swallowed both. “You should just try to sleep for now.”

“I should tell you something.” I whispered faintly to him. I had to admit it to him, I mean I knew his secret about the fires he could start with his hands. As I tried to confide in him, he put his finger to my lip and stopped me from saying another word.

“Shhh not now.” Gerard said softly. “When you’re much better we’ll talk about this. Right now I want you rested.” A sweet smile curled onto his lips. He was the most beautiful sight in the world in my eyes, nothing else could compare. I closed my eyes, sinking back into blackness. I think it’s the pills, they work so….

What was I going to possibly do? Bob warned me about this. Never tell anyone what or who you were. People would come after me and try to use me. But Gerard needs to know…I can’t exactly hide the fact now. Why did I have to grow wings? And of all times to possibly grow them now? My life was becoming somewhat normal. No longer hiding from the world or being afraid of being exposed. That’s all changed now. Where the hell is Bob when I need him? He’s supposed to be protecting me, like mother wanted him to. How could he just leave me all alone all the time. No letters, no phone call. He says he’s doing all this to protect me but sometimes I do wonder.

Please come back soon Bob, I don’t know how to deal with this on my own.
