So, I just realized the the phrase "You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar" is kind of my daily mantra. I constantly go out of my way to try and keep confrontations to a minimum and keep everyone smiling - I ask nicely, say please, ask people to take their time, say thank you and mean it

What you said reminds me of a poem/affirmation by Louise Hay. Part of it goes "....I love myself, therefore I think and behave in a loving way towards all people, for I know that that which I give out is returned to me multiplied...". 
