I just balanced my checkbook, but instead of using a calculator I did the math on paper. I'm kind of ashamed to say that it took me a couple of tries to remember how to do subtraction in numbers that big

i just studied for the GRE... the Princeton Review's "Crash Course" for the GRE actually has a ton of that "practical" math in it...
as for tips, just move the decimal over one place to the left, which will give you ten percent, then add half of the ten percent to itself, and voila: 15% tip. For example - if the bill is $18.76, 10% is $1.87, or approximately two bucks, so a three dollar tip will do the trick :)
