CHOCOLATE FACTORY reviews start pouring in...

May 16, 2005 10:03

A couple of reviews from test screamings (see how i did that?) of the, in my opinion, nightmarish-looking and unnecessary CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (another Tim Burton 're-imagining'...SIGH...remember when he made his OWN movies? That was fun...)have been popping up ( Read more... )

Danny Elfman is the God of all things musical. I'm not the biggest fan of Tim Burtons shit but it usually means ( 9 times out of 10 ) that Elfman is doing the music and that the music will own! Oingo Boingo is my favorite band....hehehe.

See...okay...I love oingo Boingo...And I used to LOVE Danny Elfman's scores...but...one day I kind of said "Oh my GOD...they all sound the SAME!"

Because they do.

We were listening to "Music for a Darkened Theatre" at the Exchange last night, actually, and we were playing "guess to movie". The majority of people couldn't tell "BATMAN" from "NIGHTBREED" from "DARKMAN"...(I could, because I'm a dork).

He's got two kinds of movie scores: the ones WITH a boy's choir and the ones WITHOUT a boy's choir.

Although, i'll tell you, my favorite score by him is the HULK score, because it doesn't sound like danny Elfman.

I was watching Batman Returns for the first time in years the other day, and I was like "Hey, this is a Burton/Elfman movie." You can just tell, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Regardless, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had better not suck.

I doubt it will suck...Burton's never really made a movie that sucks...Closest thing was PLANET OF THE APES, which was a disappointment for me because I'm such a fan of the oiginal films (the whole ant-slavery/anti-war/man-as-beast subversive message of the original series was lost completely).

A lot of people site MARS ATTACKS as his weakest film, but I love it.

I am simultaneously afraid of and drawn to this movie.

I tend to like Burton's work, but as I get older, I'm getting really tired of young people thinking that they are so alternative when they rent his movies.

RIGHT!

which is why, I think, I liked BIG FISH so much. it was like a Tim burton movie for adults.

YES! People were saying that he lost his touch with that movie, but it was just a guy growing up. I thought it was a beautiful film that spoke volumes. It also proved that he cold actually direct and not rely on twisty weird art direction.

I think people who said he lost touch with that movie are very, very stupid. Big Fish = so good and so grownup, without losing the whimsy of his old stuff.

On the subject of the new Charlie film, I am way excited. The old one was great, but from what I understand, this one is way more faithful to the book, which I'm in favor of. I'm glad that the trend of children's movies and books has gone back to the idea that kids can handle a little darkness, in fact, they tend to like it. The first movie only dabbled into how dark the book got. I'd like to see what Burton does with it.
