There were massive, multilaned roads everywhere you looked.
These exist because of the French Revolution. When the city had tiny winding streets like London, the peasants were able to block them all up with furniture, rubbish etc. and riot without the constabulary being able to interfere.
Napoleon basically razed the city to the ground and rebuilt it with the long, wide boulevards so that the same thing couldn't happen again.
