I liked The Bean Trees. (And her more recent Animal, Vegetable, Miracle- you can cut the pretention with a knife but it's still a good- and very educational- read.)

The Red Tent--She's pretty independent and content in the end.

To Kill a Mocking Bird--Both Scout and her father are strong people

I feel you ~ I have to screen my books because many started influencing me emotionally in weird ways. Anyhow, Heinlein freaking rocks for this stuff, but many of his books are inappropriate for young people so I would suggest not going there with kids, only with adults!

I'm not sure what age group you are looking for, but I remember the Babysitter Club books always being full of good healthy relationships.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!

I read a lot of Heinlien in what... early high school? It seemed a little naughty at that point but not inappropriate. Little kids may not grok it but I think it's ok for young teens ;)

I looooved the Babysitter's Club! In fourth grade I was totally obsessed with it. Obnoxiously formulaic, but a lot of fun. But yeah, chock full of Good Life Lessons.
