A book meme passed along by ashmedai . My 50 all-time favourite books, in no particular order. Surprisingly hard to limit the list to only 50, which I did by restricting titles to fiction only, and giving novel series a single listing. ( The list: )
31. Stranger In A Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein
Nice to see this on your list! While it is dated and incredibly sexist when seen through 21st century eyes, it was an eye-opening read back when I was a teen! I still love it.
This is one of the books on the list I read in my distant youth. I found it impressive when I was 14 or 15. Yes, it's dated, sexist, and a bit preachy, but still fun in retrospect.
Interesting list. I have read a few of them but some I have never heard of. I may know the authors but not the titles. Isn't that a shocking thing for a librarian to admit to? Hope that you are all well.
There are so many books here that I haven’t read, but here are the ones that I have...
Lord of The Rings ( I re-read all the books every couple of years) The French Lieutenant's Woman: (I love it and very nearly included it on my 50 list) Catch 22 (love it) Lolita (love it) Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (love it) Pride & Prejudice (love it) 1984 : (I found it very hard going) The Handmaid's Tale (It's okay) Brave New World (My most favourite book of all time) Lord of the Flies (It is okay)
I’ll check out some of the other books on your list :)
"Lord of The Rings ( I re-read all the books every couple of years)" I did that myself for years. It's the only fantasy novel I unreservedly like.
"1984 : (I found it very hard going)" Interesting. Hard going because it was so dark, or because it wasn't readable?
"The Handmaid's Tale (It's okay)" I may give it more credit than it deserves, because it was the first Margaret Atwood novel I could read through to the end without forcing myself. I want to like her books but generally don't, and found it exciting to actually enjoy one.

The only other book of hers that I've read is "The Blind Assassin". I only bought that book because of the rave reviews that it got. But I didn't like it at all, so "The Handmaid's Tale" was an improvement.

I felt that it was very well written, it was the content that I found so 'hard'. My kids studied it as part of their school English Literature subject so I also bought the movie starring John Hurt. I don't know if you have seen the movie, but my son who was then 14 was quite traumatised by it, more so than the actual book.
Lots of favorites of mine on your list! Bookmarking this post, I haven't even heard of many of them and I'm curious. Can't believe I forgot 1984 and The Iliad on my own list - YES!!!
This is a good meme isn't it? I'm glad to see Jane Austen and Jerome K Jerome on your list but there are quite a lot I don't know. I did start The French Lieutenant's Woman but gave up half way through. I will definitely have a go at this when I have a bit of spare time to compile a list!
