For some background about me, I was a musician in Jr High and High School.... did some gigs after school including the FT Worth Classic Jazz Orchestra and various wind ensembles in church... My primary instrument is Tuba, but I can get by on a trombone or baritone.
Fast forward to two weeks ago... my church had a Pipe Organ Recital. When we got to the sanctuary, I noticed the organ console had been relocated. Since the consoles that I was familiar with were pneumatic for operation of the stops, I had to find out how they moved the console from its location that morning!
After the recital, I located the music minister and asked my question. We got to conversing and he stated, after finding out that I was a musician (not yet knowing my instrument), that I should consider joining the choir/orchestra. I sarcastically asked him how many tuba players does he really need. He responded by saying that the current tuba player was relocating to Florida and she would not be here after this last weekend. He then asked if I owned a horn, to which I responded with a laugh, NO, the last horn I played was a pieced together instrument that we all called Frankenstein 7! He chimed up with a smile and said the church owned one, but that it might need some work.
I asked when rehearsals took place, and they are Weds 6-7pm. I work til 7 so I thought that was it, but decided to ask about getting off work a couple of hours early on Weds.... as it turns out, the guy that works 6a-5p is leaving, and I was offered his shift... Now there are no excuses, and it sure seems like some divine intervention is occurring on several fronts!!
I checked the horn out this weekend, and with a little valve oil and TLC, the Yamaha 4 valver plays like a new horn, although my ambature sure sucks!
So to make the story short... I am back to playing tuba.... in a church orchestra....
