If you've got a working stage 3 install going, (whenever that happens), you can then edit your make.conf settings, and rebuild the entire system without re-installing. (It will take a long time though).
Did I mention that I once considered using Gentoo as a workstation-ish OS? I never could get X going on my laptop so I gave up, bit the bullet so-to-speak, and installed SuSE. I may try it again one of these days, but I'm liking how easy SuSE is to deal with.
It just occurred to me that I've got a fairly stripped down Gentoo installation running under VMWare on my laptop that could make for a decent starting point for your install. I'll give it to sam tonight to play around with.
Mine was worked on a lot more last night, and we even emerged kde, and its apparently required manager. But, the silly thing still wouldn't startx properly. It stalled out when trying to load my mouse(o.O). Apparently one of its little dependencies wasn't installed! Way to go emerge. *Pout.* Anyway, they were redownloaded this morning, and I got all the way to a desktop! Yay! Three icons! I just had to taskbarish thing, and nothing opened up when I clicked them. I could change my background image, though... It's a step in the right direction.
I'm fairly attached to Gentoo, but I think Sam downloaded SuSE last night just in case my computer loses the battle.
