[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Cassandra Cain
FANDOM: DC Comics
CHRONOLOGY: After Batgirl #73
CLASS: Hero.
SUPERHERO NAME: Batgirl
ALTER EGO: Cassandra Cain, mild-mannered street urchin!

BACKGROUND: Cassandra Cain was conceived as an experiment by her father, David Cain, who wanted to create the perfect assassin through a combination of unusual training and genetics. Her mother is the world's most feared assassin and one of the greatest martial artists alive, Lady Shiva. When Cassandra was born, her mother left her in the care of her father, who proceeded to instill the language of violence in her from an early age. She was never taught to speak, only to communicate through actions, giving her the ability to fluently read body language.

After enduring eight years of incredibly brutal training at the hands of Cain, Cassandra is given her first true test: to kill a man. She easily accomplishes this task, but upon realizing what she's done, she runs away from Cain and wanders the world alone for around ten years.

She eventually makes her way to Gotham City after a large earthquake had leveled most of the city and rendered it a no man's land where anarchy reigned. She begins working for Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl who now operates as Oracle, as a courier. After risking her life to save Barbara's father from an assassination attempt by none other than David Cain himself, she is given the mantle of Batgirl.

During her time as Batgirl, she learns how to speak, though not fluently. She engages in a rivalry with Lady Shiva, who she does not realize is her mother. Motivated by her shameful past and the haunting memories of her first kill, she agrees to a duel to the death with Shiva, knowing that she cannot win and will die. However, she accomplishes the impossible and defeats Shiva, earning her place as one of the greatest martial artists in the world and overcoming her death wish.

This marks the beginning of the least interesting period in Cassandra's life, where she does all of the following: makes out with Superboy a bit, has a fling with a Middle-Eastern terrorist that is never seen again, takes crazy rage-drugs (on accident!), cosplays the first Batgirl, has her costume taken away, has her costume given back, bonds with Batman over blowing up a very expensive bridge and inconveniencing millions of Gotham commuters, and gets mad at the first Batgirl for calling her stupid.

She sparks a friendship with Stephanie Brown, the Spoiler, and trains her and helps her despite the objections of Batman. However, Stephanie is "killed" (as far as Cassandra knows) during a gang war in Gotham, prompting her boyfriend Tim Drake, who is Robin, to leave Gotham and take up residence in Bludhaven. Batman sends Cassandra to Bludhaven to watch out for Tim, since their abilities complement each other. During her time in the city, she strikes up several relationships with the locals, as well as a rivalry with the mercenary Deathstroke and his daughter, the Ravager.

She also briefly joins the Justice League Elite, a black-ops branch of the Justice League, where she operates undercover as a super-assassin named Kasumi. The important things about this is that it's one of the only times she's on a team and she demonstrates, interestingly enough, that it is possible to fight people using twin katanas without cutting them into mincemeat.

Cassandra eventually sets out to discover the identity of her mother, who she suspects is Shiva. She determines that Shiva is working for the League of Assassins, lead by Nyssa Al Ghul after her father's death, as a sensei. She infiltrates the League's compound, but is captured by Mr. Freeze, who is assisting Nyssa in exchange for hopefully being able to bring his wife back to life. Cassandra persuades him that Nyssa is only using him, and he tosses his wife into a Lazarus Pit. However, due to his wife's degraded genetic state and chemical modifications performed on the Lazarus Pit, she comes back as an insane, living embodiment of the Lazarus Pit's life-giving energies.

After a brief battle, Cassandra and a few of the League's assassins escape from the compound, where they are hunted by the remaining assassins. Trying to protect them, Cassandra is killed by the Mad Dog, one of her father's failed prototypes for the ultimate assassin that she ended up becoming. While in a state between life and death, she is guided by the spirit (or a hallucination) of Stephanie, who reveals that Deathstroke has destroyed Bludhaven. Devastated by the sight of her dead friends, she realizes that the tragedy could have been averted if she had only embraced her destiny as an assassin and killed the villains responsible for the atrocity.

Meanwhile, Shiva, unwilling to allow Cassandra to die in such a manner, takes her body and places her in the Lazarus Pit. Cassandra returns to life, and Shiva reveals that the reason she had her was so that Cassandra could one day stop her. They duel one final time, and Cassandra snaps Shiva's neck. Before leaving, she tosses her mother's body onto a hook hanging over the Lazarus Pit so that her body would presumably fall in and Shiva would return to life.

Disappearing from her life in superheroics, she abandons her role as Batgirl and returns to wandering the Earth.

PERSONALITY: Cassandra is good-hearted, but often struggles with a darker nature brought on by her parentage and horrific upbringing. Her social maturity is comparable to that of an adolescent. She is quiet and shy, usually preferring to let her actions speak for her. She has had few friendships, and she's fiercely loyal and protective of the ones she has, sometimes to the point of being overprotective. However, her feelings are easily hurt, especially about matters relating to her poor reading ability and what she perceives as a lack of intelligence. She can hold a grudge, and it often takes her a long time to get over them. Despite her dependence on others to function normally in society, she is a loner. She has a strong will and when presented with a challenge, she usually will not back down until she overcomes it.

She gives up being Batgirl due to killing her mother in order to stop her from continually killing people, breaking her oath to never again take a life. During this period, she is more open to the idea of killing her enemies, due to the trauma caused by the destruction of Bludhaven and her guilt at not being able to prevent it. By refusing to kill, she allowed Deathstroke and the Penguin to kill an entire city, something she plans to never allow to happen again, by any means necessary.

Unlike the other Bat Family members (unless you count Jason Todd), Cass is a bit more predisposed to extreme violence, and is constantly holding herself back from killing. She eventually gives in and becomes evil and brainwashed by Deathstroke in canon, but she gets better and we don't really speak of it.

POWER: Spontaneously generating cups of tea. Teacup and all. One will appear in her hand whenever she feels like some good ol' tea.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE: [The distinct thumping sound of a fist slamming into something heavy is heard before anything is seen on the video feed. The camera finally comes into focus, showing a girl, familiar to some, assaulting a punching bag with such force that it flies up and almost touches the ceiling with each blow. She pauses momentarily and wipes sweat from her forehead.]

Am back here. Not sure why.

[A strong, sudden kick sends the bag flying, and this time it actually does touch the ceiling with a thud. She resumes her attack, and with each blow of her fist or elbow, one imagines that it feels like earthquake tremors in the room above.

With one final elbow strike, the bag tears open, spilling sand across the floor. She stares at it with mixed emotions. On one hand, she managed to destroy a bag in record time. On the other, Babs is probably growing tired of buying punching bags that last about two days.]

Do they make, um... concrete punching bags?

[Private to Damian]

Still want to... train?

[Private to Barbara]

Guess you, uh... know I'm back already. Want to talk.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE: The city seemed almost how she left it: dark, foreboding, and not entirely dissimilar to Gotham. Her feet remembered the way as she darted between rooftops toward Barbara's apartment. It seemed strange to gaze out across the skyline without lenses covering her eyes, and to leap over alleyways without a cape billowing behind her. But that almost seemed like another life now.

The city may not have changed too much, but she had. She could almost feel Shiva's head between her hands sometimes, still feel her muscles tense as she twisted, and still hear the sickening crack of her mother's neck. It turned her stomach to think about it. But not as much as when she thought of the lifeless, accusing stares of her friends from Bludhaven that she was too soft to save.

She realized now that she'd been selfish, always concerned about not killing because of how it made her feel. She had thought that she understood the sacrifices that had to be made to be a hero. But she didn't. None of them did. She knew now that she had to be willing to give up everything to protect those that she loved. If she'd understood that back then, maybe Bludhaven would still be around. Maybe Stephanie would still be alive. They were worth more than a thousand Deathstrokes or Black Masks.

Silently landing on a windowsill, she effortlessly picked the lock on the window and slipped inside. The apartment was familiar, the only difference being signs that someone new was living there, in addition to Babs: discarded clothing too small to fit her former mentor, and empty soda cans lying around that she knew Babs wouldn't drink. Maybe she'd found a new pupil during Cass's absence.

She soundlessly made her way down the hall to her room. It was exactly how she left it: mostly bare, except for a punching back hanging from the roof and a broken desk repaired with duct tape. Everything was so similar, but she knew things wouldn't be the same. Babs knew what had happened to her, and what she would become after killing Shiva. Would she respond with anger? Disappointment? Pity?

She flopped down on her bed, not even bothering to take off her clothes or slip under the covers. Her concerns were best left for tomorrow, when Babs would realize that her wayward student had returned.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER: I've included links to all the in-game posts I did when I was a member here. I wasn't too active last time, but I've dropped out of the game that was taking all my time, so I hope that won't be a problem this time!
