i didn't know this about him. I'm glad he took a stand.

today i watched a short documentary that sought to collect and present all known footage of jewish children feeling hitler's crush. it was more disturbing than anything i'd seen before. motion picture cameras--i'm sure quite rare--witnessed catatonic youngsters hiding in basements, picking nits from each other's hair, sitting along sidewalks with the overwhelmed and hopeless gaze that didn't reach adults until corralled behind barbed wire.

when adults die, you know at least they got to grow up.

Rommel in Africa does seem a million miles from all that.
