Can't you connect the two computers to be on the same network so that you can copy directly without using an external drive?

Alternatively, if you can remove the hard drive from the old machine, it's $20 to get an IDE/SATA-to-USB converter to make that drive into an external drive with you can then connect to the laptop in order to copy the .pst file directly.

is there a way to set up a new laptop to access an old omputer like it was an external drive without the IDE?

I don't think so.

Just to cover all the bases.. did you delete all the old stuff you don't need? Empty deleted items? Maybe strip out the calendar if it's trying to save that too? Pull out all items with attachments?

Odd. You should be able to just save/backup to a .pst and the grab that file and drop it on the new machine. Then in new Outlook, open it and drag/drop everything over.

How big is the .pst file?

That's different.
OK, I do this all the time - just did it when I upgraded back in December. Open Outlook, click Import/Export under Files and choose Export as .pst. I choose my Personal Folder or Mailbox and SubFolders so I get everything. Once it's backed up, I just transfer the .pst to something (make sure you've got double the space of the file size just to be good...so about 2 to 2.5gb). I then drop it on the new machine, go into New Outlook and choose Open Outlook Data File from File. Once it's opened, I drag and drop everything into new locations so it's all local and then close the opened data file.

The error you're getting sounds like either not enough space or it's having issues reading from whatever you're using for the transfer.
