So, I went all the way into "town" [Central Square, Cambridge] to buy kosher, fair trade chocolate.

It is vegan.

IT IS NOT PAREVE.

Well, fuck that!

So later I'm going to hit the regular supermarket and pray the have pareve chocolate, fair trade or not.

If not, tomorrow I have to make a special trip to the Butcherie, since they're already closed ( Read more... )

utter confusion, cranky, bad news, wtf

I bet it's not really dairy. Several hashgachot including the OU label as dairy if it's made on the same equipment as dairy. Since its vegan and I assume does not have an FDA allergy warning, I would probably assume it's dairy equipment. What brand is it?

I didn't recognize the brand names. I'm pretty sure it's dairy equipment or trace dairy, but if it says D and not DE, then I start to worry. Aren't we supposed to only treat something as dairy if there's a certain percentage dairy in it?!

I think people have gone too far.

I thought the kosher certifying people had a threshold of dairy (or meat) below which something could still be considered pareve or the other category. Like a certain number of parts per million or maybe parts per thousand or parts per. . . something.

I also thought that vegan meant no molecules of meat or dairy no way no how. Or at least, an even lower threshold.

How about crisco? Sure, it's full of trans fats, but it's definitely everything-free. . .

I *believe* if something is less than 1/40th of a batch, it isn't supposed to count. This is why I am baffled. Why are we being more stringent than the Great Sages?!

And if there's trace dairy, isn't that ... not-vegan? There's only trace amounts of animal exploitation in your food, but that's okay right? I mean, seriously, vegans are way hardcore; I have NO IDEA who this company's target demographic is.
