If you are looking south bay, I'd suggest Mountain View. I like it around there. We lived a bit farther up in San Mateo. You can go up to Palo Alto, just say on the right side of the highway. Seriously. NOT on the Ikea side.

We are going to try for Cupertino and so that hopefully we wont need a car right away, but are really looking everywhere.

CalTrain is right there too, especially in Mtn View so don't rule out places around there as well. If he's working for "a big company" they tend to have shuttles to and from the train ;)
