I know what it is like to be an obsessive fanfic reader, and completely throw yourself into a story... only to have it abandoned for years. You want to see said fic finished. You NEED to see said fic finished. To the point you fantasize and dream, and fantasize

My intention was to throw all my cards on the table. And no, I'm not using her lack of responses as a justification for finishing her fanfic.
I made my attempts of good faith, and that's all there is to it. If she were to happen to contact me later I would respect all her wishes and restrictions.
And just because we can't make money on them does not mean we can claim them as ours. Ethnically maybe. But you can't claim possession to something that already has a previous copywrite.

We write based on another author's copyrighted work. Our mutual consensus and code of ethics put all these rules to something that doesn't really exist. In the end, legally, they are not ours.
Meh, I'm rambling. This is my stance on it at least.

I am taking everything I understand from her story... and leading the characters to an end in a completely separate fic.
How is that at all different from the hundreds of "Final Battle" fanfics authors wrote in response to HBP?
There is no difference between "finishing" and "fanfic."
