Gah, I know. Did they have to use 'tentacle' in every other joke? You could see when Carlos either flinched or eyerolled whenever the other guy made the awful jokes.

But that's just how the media deals with fandom in general. They still do the same thing to Star Trek fans. Even though Star Trek and its various incarnations have been so mainstream for over 30 years, whenever they do a story on it it's still "HAHA BASEMENT BOY LOSERS WHO LIVE WITH MOMMY AND WEAR SPOCK EARS" even though the majority of the fanbase are well-off, productive upper middle-class people who -don't- go around wearing their fandoms on their sleeve. Seriously, go to a sci-fi con nowadays, and it's NOT basement boys you see.

Right now it's because the fandom for anime is young, and making a lot of the same mistakes the Star Trek fandom did in its adolecence. Hence the "tentacle/schoolgirl HAW" jokes Carlos got on G4. It's sad they still got those in even though Carlos was being very concious to choose shows that they couldn't call softcore porn.

its not possible for a fandom to make mistakes...that is the nature of fandom. what mistakes could it make? in the shows that are released? the fandom has no control over that. in the shows that are popular? so many different kinds of shows are popular (most of them aren't even remotely porn related or even softcore of any sort) so fandom really has no control over that either. what did star trek fandom do wrong? what could they have done to make things "better"? i don't understand. the more normal middle class people who don't go around wearing their fandom on their sleeve aren't as noticable as the ones who do. are they to make themselves more noticable to lend some sort of credibility to the fandom? wouldn't that make them into one of the people that DO wear the fandom on their sleeve...basically negating the whole arguement. are you asking people to not be as noticable or fanpersonish? that is unrealistic. besides its the crazies that tend to bring more people into the fandom because people will stop to take notice and maybe get ( ... )

Hmm, good point. But, the fact is the bad face of fandoms tend to be the most vocal, hence why media outlets like G4 think its ok to make the jokes.

I'm not claiming that G4 is justified in their puerile behavior and lack of respect. It -would- be nice to see media take the initative and stop harping up the bad aspects of the fandoms. This is the same stuff we ran into with that interview with New Times last year. When we were face to face with the guy, we had an intellegent discussion, and he was surprised that we weren't these drooling social rejects. But that still didnt stop him from trying to make us seem that way when he wrote his article. You'd never know from the printed article that we spent nearly 2 hours talking about Tezuka, Miyazaki, the coming of age of the 80's kids who worshiped thier cartoons, and Disney's influence over the industry.

yup...the media likes sensational stories and thats what they look for. normal people with slightly odd hobbies aren't sensational. freaks with obsessive hobbies are. expecting the media to grow up is like expecting the freaks to show a little dignity ( ... )
