A/N: Happy birthday, Taisa!!!!!! I hope this was worth the two-month wait! Haha, maybe I'll come up with an awesome idea in the shower again for Christmas! XDD Looooooooves!

It wasn’t considered proper for a man to be in the room while his wife was giving birth, so Byakuya had dutifully-impatiently, for once in his life-waited outside until he was called.

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl while he waited, but the time finally arrived when one of the servants called him into the room where Hisana lay, the new baby wrapped in a blanket in her arms. He lingered for several moments at the doorway at first; Hisana always had a way of stealing the breath from his lungs and looking at her now…the nobleman was overcome by so many uncategorized emotions that for those few suspended moments, he felt almost lightheaded. She was beautiful as always, and a soft kindly smile was on her face even as she appeared tired and weary.

It wasn’t as if he hadn’t seen an infant before-part of being the Kuchiki family head was attending such events as a new noble infant’s first birthday or such, and he remembered being taken to such events as a child, as well, in preparation for taking over the family, but this was…different. There was just something…incredible about the fact that this was his child-their child. He was…a father. He had a real family, now. Himself, his wife, and a child, no longer simply the long chain of extended family that comprised the noble Kuchiki clan, and that thought kept him frozen where he stood at the doorway.

“Byakuya-sama?”

No sooner were the soft words were spoken than Byakuya was at her side, in a heartbeat. Perhaps not the most professional use of shunpo, but it hardly mattered. Nothing in the world mattered at this very moment, nothing except Hisana and his child. Not Yamamoto. Not the sixth division. Not anyone else in the Kuchiki family. His world, right now, was his wife and his baby. For once, Byakuya came before Captain Kuchiki.

“It’s a girl, Byakuya-sama.”

His heart thumped, and he nodded, slowly, trying to think past the throbbing in his ears.

“Would you like to hold her?”

Again, he slowly nodded, and held out his arms to receive the child. The weight was surprising, but he did not falter. The baby girl giggled and cooed in his arms, and as yet ever more emotions he couldn’t put a name to rushed through his mind, he had to wonder if this was how his parents had felt, the first time they’d held him, over a century ago.

A fist of tiny fingers curled around his own index finger and a laugh rang out. She was so tiny and fragile now, but he knew she would one day become strong. Already she clung tightly to him, not faltering even as his own weight shifted-tenacity, even just a few minutes into life. Tenacious, strong, proud, brave…she would be everything a Kuchiki ought to be and more-a Kuchiki like no other had been.

“What shall be her name?” he asked, quietly, still watching the child that was smiling up at him-she had her mother’s eyes, he felt.

And then Hisana looked down for a moment, with one of those mysterious, sweetly sad smiles that made him want to know so desperately what plagued her but also just reinforced why he loved her so much, and then...

“Let’s call her…Rukia.”
