This was a delightful story for me to write. I had the chance to pay homage to the many myths and stories I loved so much as a child, though ironically enough, The Snow Queen was not one of them. Many thanks to
elvisglasses5 for her lovely prompt to get me writing my own fairytale re-imagination. If you’d like to read the original fairytale, here is a link:
The Snow Queen.
I chose not to do a literal reinterpretation of the story because that seems rather mechanical to me, so I took a lot of liberties not only with the structure but also the substance of the story. I was inspired to start the story in media res by The Odyssey and was actually quite pleased with how it worked out.
I’ve always enjoyed the concept of embedding stories within stories using a framing device (as found in 1001 Nights). So I relished the chance to recount some of my favorite stories using reverse causation and self-fulfilling prophecies. I also found myself enjoying the process of selecting a story that I felt matched each character; Sam’s story, for instance, resonates with canon more so than with Aurora, while Dean’s story matches up with both canon and Aurora to some extent.
Here is the list of the many sources of the various stories and allusions used throughout the story. Most were tweaked from their original forms to serve my purposes, but contain the same essential elements I originally loved.
Sumerian mythology:
The Epic of Gilgamesh
Utnapishtim and the Great Flood
Japanese mythology:
Susanoo and the Slaying of Orochi
Amaterasu in Iwayado
Greco-Roman mythology:
Demeter and the Rape of Persephone
Orpheus and Eurydice
Tiresias and the Snakes
The Odyssey
Biblical stories:
The Prodigal Son
The Sacrifice of Isaac
One Thousand and One Nights
The Ruined Man who Became Rich Again through a Dream
The Tale of Attaf
Norse Mythology
Vahalla and Ragnarok
Director's cut: My story was slightly longer in previous incarnations, and got edited down for pacing and structural reasons. If you'd like to read the older, longer, director's cut version, here's a link to a word document version.
