Sunday, January 24 (Cape Horn)

Today is the only day during the cruise where we were at sea but not playing any tournament games. That's probably because we were passing by Cape Horn, the southernmost point in South America. As for "overt game losing mistakes" -- these generally only happen at the end of the game, where it's measurable that your move wins 0% of the time, and the alternative wins 100%.

In general, during most non-blowouts (i.e. in positions where equity is closely connected to winning chances, which is often), every 2-3 points of equity loss correlates with approximately a 1% bigger chance of losing against near perfect play. So those little mistakes tend to add up over time.

Yeah, that's the concept I was getting at with "overt game-losing mistakes". This is as opposed to Glenn Dunlop's definition, which is starkly different. According to him, one can have game-winning *and* game-losing plays in the same game...

I did end up Quackling the rest of the games for the 1st half of the tournament, but I never got around to the rest of them. The amount of unstructured free time I had on the cruise allowed me to do things I never do like Quackle some games and write this blog. Here at home, I simply don't have the time (or choose to spend it doing other leisure activities). Given more free time, I'm sure I would Quackle regularly. I content myself with trying to cram in as many tournament and club games as possible.

Enjoy my writing while it lasts, because I definitely can't keep it up at home. Although, perhaps now that the ice is broken on my LJ, I'll maybe make the odd post here and there
