At the same time, there needs to be accountability.
"mental health disabilities, addiction, having made bad choices in their past, cannot get appropriate housing due to a bad rental history, or a job because of not obtaining positive references." There is definitely a sliding scale and I would not advocate for every felon to be treated like they never harmed anyone, for example. It really depends.
I agree. Accountability is important. People do need to take responsibility for their choices. I work for an Independent lLiving Center and part of the IL philosophy is that a person has the right to succeed and the right to fail. But that doesn't mean that I can ignore the desperate calls that come in daily. I still have to talk to them, try to put them in a direction where success is possible and I need to let their failures go until the next time they want to try. It's a cycle and right now I want off the merry go round! Thanks for your comment.
Thanks! I need a break. I'm going to take the summer off and we'll see what happens. There are some tentative plans to work part time but iI'm not pushing it right now. I'm just tired! haha. Thanks for your comment!
Congrats on the upcoming retirement - do you have any plans for what you'll be filling your time with? :)
Your job sounds difficult and emotional and probably at times devastating and at times wonderfully fulfilling. I do hope that the staff under you have picked up on your influence and take up your hammer after you are gone. People that need help don't just need help; they need people that care about their success and that want to help them, whether it's their job or not.
I plan on taking the summer off. I've been in a couple of summer theater productions and depending on how the virus plays out hopefully I'll do that again. I have a possible consulting/contracting job with a school system to teach Braille/assistive tech to blind kids so we'll see what the system offers me. I'll play it by ear otherwise. I'll also spend time with my new puppy. I'm hoping the staff will continue to do good work and the new executive director that is taking over (not my job as I'm the assistant manager) will do good work and continue the mission of the agency. We'll see. Thanks for your thoughtful comment!
Yeah! I'm gettting to the point where I'm very cranky so it's time to get out. It's been a rough couple of years in the whole human service field. Give me books, knitting and doing a whole lot of nothing for a little while. Thanks for reading as always!
Thank you for your dedication. There is absolutely no question that our cultures have created a cycle that is nearly impossible to escape. We need to DO BETTER.
