Last night me and my work friend Louise got put on sets. So we rolled a garment rail over with a moveable middle bar that pegs into the side. I asked 'Shall we put it on the top peg?' and she said; 'No, lets put it on the bottom one.' So, we moved it down.
All of a sudden it jammed and wouldnt move. I wiggled it to try and losen it, and I heard Louise cry out in pain.
Her finger had got caught between the bar and the inside of the rail, and wasnt going anywhere. We tried to pull the bar away, but there was nowhere for it to go! She was screaming in pain and I just didnt know what to do!
All of the Stockroom staff dropped what they were doing and rushed over. They called for the Managers and ran to get some water and soap to try and losen it. But to no avail.
An ambulence was called.
They gave Louise gas and air to both calm her down and take the pain away whilst we held the bar still and kept it cool with water.
Her finger went blue. Then turned white.
They couldnt remove her finger either because there was no way of moving it.
In the end, the fire brigade was called. They came in with cutting tools and sawed the bar in half.
Her hand was quickly bandaged and she was promptly whisked away to hospital for checks along with a friend.
We quickly resumed work afterwards, but didnt get much done as we were 2 people down.
I spent all night worrying about her and replaying the sounds in my head. It was awful, and I felt like it was my fault. On top of what had happened earlier in the day, I wasnt in the mood to be rushed. I had more important things to worry about than how much work I got done.
At around 8, we were stood working around a table, when we all heard a familiar voice! Shed come back from hospital to let everyone know she was OK. Her finger was in a support bandage and slinged up. Shed been pretty lucky. Thered been no cut, nothing was severed. It was just very swollen and bruised!
I couldnt stop apologising, and she said it wasnt my fault at all. She was just chuffed about being saved by some 'buff unifromed firemen'... But it was such a relief to see her with all 10 fingers!
All I have to do now is worry about my friend in Intensive Care :( I havnt heard any update on his condition, but I know Penny went into theatre today to have her leg pinned. Im going to visit tomorrow with some other 6th Form friends. *fingers crossed*
Yep. Yesterday was eventful to say the least.
