My Sister’s Friend

Sam’s new friend was interesting.  She had dark hair and bright blue eyes.  She stared at Dean when they were first introduced; her name turned out to be Cas, and it was extremely unnerving.  Sam always did have weird friends.  She was over at their apartment almost constantly.  Cas and Sam were always doing homework, writing papers, or watching bad television.  Dean still found her presence strange, but he had learned to accept Sam’s quirky little friend.  Besides it was good for Sam to have friends that were girls, growing up without a mother didn’t leave a girl with much chance for female companionship.

Dean met Cas’ older brother one month later at the auto shop.  Gabriel’s car was in need of a new transmission.  Dean warned him that the fix would take a while, but Gabriel said it was not a problem.  He pulled up a chair and promptly began to talk Dean’s ear off for the next three hours.

“My sister talks about you all the time, you know.”  No Dean didn’t know that; he usually tried to avoid talking to Cas because she was weird and she was Sam’s friend and Dean didn’t trust himself not to try any funny stuff with the wide-eyed, innocent girl.  “You didn’t know; I can tell by the shocked look on your face you probably didn’t know you were making.”  Dean’s expression promptly turned into a frown which only caused Gabriel to chuckle.  “Your sister’s kinda hot.”

“Don’t talk about my sister like that.”  He was getting angry now.  Nobody talked about his sister like some piece of meat; especially not some floppy-haired, short, creepy dude who just happened to be Sam’s new friend’s brother.
He was just working into a good furious rage when Gabriel had voice cut in, “Hey, don’t get mad.  I was just making an observation.”  He paused to take a breath and continued, “I was meaning to talk to you about her anyway.”

“Yeah?  What about?”

“We’ve been talking, your sister and I,” that was funny.  Dean’s never heard Sam mention Gabriel before; or maybe he just wasn’t paying close enough attention.  “And, well, I kinda like her and I was interested in asking her out, and she mentioned about how protective you are, and I know I’m more than a few years older, and it seems like it would be a problem, but I promise it won’t be.  I have nothing but respect for Sam, and I will treat her as she deserves.”  Dean wondered if Gabriel took a breath at all during that rant.

“How much older?”  This was a fact from Gabriel’s tirade that Dean could focus that won’t make him lose his sanity.
“Seven years.”  Seven years, that was quite a lot considering it was his little sister they were talking about.  “Look Dean, I just wanted to ask for your permission because I know it’s important to Sam.”  Gabriel looked sincere.  Plus Dean had to give the guy points for having the guts to ask him for permission to actually date Sam.  He didn’t remember anyone doing that before.

Dean gave in.  He kind of had too since it was his little sister they were talking about and Dean only wanted her happy;  if this Gabriel guy would make her happy then he had to say yes.  “Ok, fine.  But if I hear about you treating her bad in anyway, your ass is mine.  You hear?”

“Fine, same goes for my sister.”

Dean’s brow furrowed.  “But I’m not dating your sister.”

“I’m sure you’ll change your mind.”  Gabriel gave him a knowing look and headed off to pay Bobby for the repairs on his car.  What a strange little man, was what Dean thought as he saw Gabriel drive off in his car and turned to help another customer.

Sam and Cas still hung out around the apartment; the only difference was Gabriel often joined them.  Sam and Gabriel kept their touching to a minimum when Dean was around for which he was extremely grateful.  Gabriel was loud; like someone talking in a megaphone loud.  And he was always telling some ridiculous story at which Sam usually giggled, yes his sister giggled, he never thought he’d see the day.

Another difference was that Dean noticed Cas more.  He was suddenly more aware of where she was in the room relative to him.  When her eyes were on him his skin felt tingly, which made him feel like a school girl, which made him blush; so really it was just a horrible reaction and he usually left the room quickly afterwards.  ‘Cause this was just stupid, right?  He couldn’t have a crush on his sister’s boyfriend’s sister; the fact that he was even considering Cas had Dean thinking he was losing his mind.

The four of them were watching a movie together some weeks later.  Well Dean was watching; Sam had fallen asleep with her head in Gabriel’s lap and Gabriel’s snoring indicated that he was not conscious anymore either.  That just left Cas, and Dean wasn’t sure what she was doing.  She looked much too tense to be enjoying the movie and he was almost positive that she kept shooting sneaky glances his way.

Dean was content to ignore all of this at least until the credits started rolling and he had nothing else with which to hold his focus.  If at all possible Dean thought Cas looked more tense than she did fifteen minutes ago.  The poor girl must think Dean had some intension to have his way with her or pull out all that beautiful thick hair; and wait did he just think that?

“I don’t bite you know.  Unless you ask nicely,” he meant it to be light-hearted, but Cas’ eyes went impossibly wider at the phrase.  “Sorry, that was supposed to be a joke.  I was trying to make the situation less awkward, but apparently I’ve done just the opposite.”

Cas smiled a little at that.  “Sam speaks very highly of you.”  Ok… Dean wasn’t exactly sure where that came from.  “She was very happy you gave Gabriel your blessing for them to date.  She was quite worried that you’d leave him crippled or something instead.”

It was Dean’s turn to smile now.  “It had crossed my mind, but ultimately I had to do what would make Sam happy.”
“You’re always doing that.”  That sentence confused Dean, but she continued, “Putting other people’s happiness above your own.  It’s a very admirable trait.”  Great now he was blushing again; how did she keep managing to make him do that?

Their conversation ended after that because Dean saw fit to wake Sam and by extension her boyfriend, so they could all go to sleep and Dean could slip away from Cas’ intense gaze.

Cas and Dean fell into an easy sort of friendship after that; which was good because Sam and Gabriel were heading toward six months together and had become increasingly more affectionate.  It disturbed Dean and more often than not he felt compelled to protect Sam’s virtue, even though he was sure Sam could take care of herself if need be.  But he was the older brother and damn it, it was his job to do such things.

Gabriel spent a majority of his nights at Sam and Dean’s apartment; in Sam’s room of course.  Dean thought it was awkward as hell and spent most of his nights listening to very loud AC/DC in hopes to drown out any potential noises a big brother should never hear his baby sister make.  They proceeded this way for months until they decided that Gabriel and Cas should just move in, since they spent all their time there anyway.

So Gabriel moved into Sam’s room, much to Dean’s dismay, and Cas took up residence in the small room next door to Dean.  It worked out; they were a small unconventional family, sharing space.  It took some time for them to get used to all being under the same roof and adapting to everyone’s unique schedule, but eventually they figured it out.
Sam had gotten into law school, Cas was heading on to do graduate studies and they both started in the fall, but why anyone would want to go through more school was beyond Dean.  Gabriel continued his job at the bakery, which Dean frequented just so Gabriel would slip him a free slice of pie.  Dean went on working at Bobby’s auto shop and their life fell into a wonky routine.

*****

One random weekend night found Dean unable to sleep.  He walked out of his room to plop on the couch to watch horrible late night TV, only to find the couch already occupied.  Cas was stretched out, reading what appeared to be a trashy romance novel, and wearing tiny cotton pajamas that left very little to Dean’s imagination.  This started his blood flowing to traitorous parts of his body.  He could probably just sneak back to his room and give some much needed attention to certain parts.

“You’re welcome to join me, since it seems you are unable to sleep as well.”  Damn.  Now he was caught.  Dean took the chair that allowed him to see as little of Cas as possible.

He was out here now so he might as well make conversation, right?  “What’re you reading?”

“Tonight I happen to be reading a romance.  It’s light on plot and heavy on sexual relations…”  And whoa, was Cas talking about sex?  In that outfit?  Dean was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to survive the rest of this conversation without pouncing on Cas.  God if that didn’t kick start his libido to life.  “I feel the need to read about someone’s successful relationships; since I seem unable to start one of my own.”

Dean had in fact noticed that Cas never seemed to date, not that he’d been paying that much attention to the fact mind you.  While he found it strange he didn’t really feel he had any right to question Cas’ lack of male companionship since they’d met.  “Why don’t you ever date Cas?”  It was out of his mouth before his brain could catch up; and Dean kind of wished he didn’t say anything.  Way to make the poor girl feel bad.

“Guys seem to find me… weird.”  Dean opened his mouth to protest that Cas wasn’t weird, but didn’t he have that exact thought when he first met her?  “Many of them seem to be unable to look past this.”  She rotated to address Dean directly, “I know you thought so too.  And no, Sam didn’t tell me; you had that look the guys get around me.  I’ve learned not to get too worked up about it.”

This conversation was falling into one Dean’s one of his categories of things never to talk about.  So he did what he does best, avoid.  Dean snatched up the remote and settled on an infomercial about chopping onions or something.
