Not really a poll poll: cars, and Al Gore's new documentary

I've got a 12 year old Honda Accord with 175,000 miles on it. I've kept it maintained and it's been a great car, but ( Read more... )

I drive a '97 Corolla with almost 120,000 miles on it, and I LOVE my car. It's only got a cassette player and no cruise control, but Lizzy never lets me down. ;) When I do mostly freeway driving I average 35-40 MPG, and it NEVER breaks down. You just don't have to worry about that with Toyotas. Eventually I'll buy a new car, but I plan on sticking with this one for a while yet. My family tends to drive our cars until it's not worth fixing them (like the '92 Tercel we just got rid of a couple of weeks ago), or they die of pure exhaustion (such as the '77 Corolla my mom bought before my parents got married, and which lasted for 23 years).

Any thoughts on hybrids? My dad has a 2003 Prius, and he loves it. He's getting about 45-50 MPG in it. It's the older design, the one that has a real trunk rather than a hatchback (it looks mostly like an Echo), and it's surprisingly roomy inside. As far as maintenance, I don't know what Toyota's doing now, but when my dad bought his Prius, the dealership gave him a deal where they paid for all of his ( ... )

I was really shocked to discover what good resale Priuses seem to have - I suppose because the demand remains high, but I suspect also because they have good maintenance records.

I might look at the hybrid Civic, but I think Toyota's hybrid technology is better than Honda's.Here, the waiting list for Civic hybrids is as long or longer than Priuses. I checked a couple places, and they all tried to extort money out of me to "hold one" - yes, because I'm going to buy a car I've NEVER DRIVEN. :p ( ... )

Yeah, Dad could almost get as much money out of his Prius as he paid for it brand-new, were he to sell it now. He won't, though. He adores that car. It was his mid-life crisis purchase. Most guys get sports cars or motorcycles-- my dad, the engineer, goes for the coolest technology. ;) And the subsidizing Priuses is true-- well, at least it was for the first model. I'm not sure if they still do now, but the price tag for the Prius was significantly lower than the cost to produce it. They really wanted it to be affordable.

As far as I know, he hasn't had any door ding problems, but I'm sure a lot of that is because he's very overprotective and parks in the boonies whenever possible. :P

Which is why I think it's ridiculous the way some people go off about how terribly overpriced they are. Compared to what? A Honda Accord starts at around the same price as the Prius, and isn't nearly as efficient.
