Well, I think Jack had intended to go slowly and get used to it all first. But he was so adorable that John took a chance.

And if coming out to yourself is like a second puberty (and I think it is), then it would be pretty heady to have a cute guy flirt with you. So Jack suddenly finds himself with a date :).

While Jack must be scared it must be exciting for him as well discovering something new about himself and that he is acting on his new found knowledge so soon makes sense.

Now it will be interesting to see how the cool and unruffled Ennis reacts to Jack's news that he has a date with another guy. I think Ennis will have to take a harder look at his own feelings and sexuality.
