I like John as Jack's friend, but I can see why Jack is unable to fall in love with him. Jack is in love with his enterprising best friend, that raffish waif who's been at his side since they were boys, and the hopelessly romantic part of Jack would like nothing better than to be made love to on the beach, then disappear into the sunset with Ennis. :)
