Bought a comforter set for a full/queen bed, but my featherbed is smaller than a comforter would normally be. So I spent two hours hand stitching the edges on the two perpendicular sides of the cover so that it'd fit. Even when aligning everything just right and using clothespins to baste everything, my seams were pretty sad and crooked. It's ( Read more... )

I've been meaning to break out the sewing machine for a while now. It's annoying that I buy short jeans and they still hit the ground. I'm not great at sewing but it definitely is something that improves with practice, and I just try not to fuck things up permanently, haha.

Yeah....in the first place, it's hard to find petite pants that don't look like they're made for women over 50. The normal petite inseam is 29", and my ideal inseam is about 27". I think maybe they expect women to alter the hem anyway, since it's such an easy fix. And as long as the shape of the garment is close enough to suit a petite woman (for example, where the knee is supposed to hit) it probably really isn't such a big deal.

Evidently 40% of American women are 5'3" or below.

It's kind of baffling...I'm 5'5" so you would think I'd be at the max end and they'd fit me perfectly. I guess I have short legs or something, haha.

Maybe you have a proportionally long torso?

Ha, my mom is really handy at sewing, so I find myself handing off all fixin's to her. Occasionally when I do my own sewing, uh, I make sure it's something like sheets where no one else has to see it. I'm bad at it (probably for aforementioned reason).

Yes! Since the stitches are in the comforter cover, it's likely that no one will notice. ;)

I like to sew by hand. I can sew pretty good but of course it takes me fooorrrreevveerrrrr andmy fingers hurt afterward. I could use my mom's sewing machine but I don't know how to use it and neither does she!

I should take lessons how to use it via youtube one of these days...

I have a blanket that I had to sew the sides. I'll try to get a picture of it if I can remember. The sewing job I did was bad. It was an easy and quick "stitch" but it took forever because the hole in the side of the blanket was long.

I don't know how to use a sewing machine, either. I hope you get a chance to learn. I'll bet it'd be especially handy with a little one to sew for.

I sometimes forget how lucky I am that my mom is a quilter. I've never done my own mending and hopefully never will. You need a crafty old lady in your life.

Maybe I do. My mom used to actually have time to do that sort of thing, but lately she's been pretty taxed...
