baekhyun/jongin | side!baekhyun/jongdae (as always)
pg-13 | ~650 words
Jongin doesn't exactly have a good taste in men.
"Hey," he's drunk. Anyone can tell. Or maybe just Jongin. "You free?"
"Stay there," Jongin replies-he knows where to go, already fetching his coat and car keys. He's meeting his thesis advisor tomorrow to report his progress, which he's supposed to be doing tonight, but, you know, graduation can wait.
Jongin reaches the bar in five minutes-he swears he only ran three red lights. He finds Baekhyun sitting in a booth by the bar, drunk, definitely. He looks the same whenever he's drunk-mussed hair, red nose, pink cheeks. Jongin knows, he has been dealing with his drunk best friend since the first time Baekhyun knows alcohol, back in high school. "Hey," he greets, one hand on Baekhyun's shoulder.
"Jonginnie!" is the familiar answer. Slurred and high-pitched, only half conscious. Baekhyun takes another swig of his drink. Jongin takes a seat next to him.
"Never settle down," Baekhyun comments, pointing his pretty finger at Jongin. Of course, thinks Jongin, of course it's this again. "You'll break up anyway."
Then stop, Jongin wants to say. "What happened this time?" he asks instead, chin on hand, feigning interest. Jongin doesn't really want to know what happened this time. He knows. It's always the same.
"The usual," Baekhyun answers, shaking his glass on his hand, and Jongin really needs to stop looking at those pretty fingers. "Jongdae's a jerk."
Then why are you with him, is what Jongin thinks. "Sure," is his answer. Because Jongin knows Jongdae, and he's almost the nicest person on earth, with all his volunteer work and humanitarian shit. It's a wonder he ends up with Baekhyun, because if anyone in that relationship is a jerk, it's Baekhyun, really. Jongin doesn't exactly have a good taste in men.
"Stick with one-night stands," Baekhyun continues preaching. Jongin tries to listen, but Baekhyun really needs to stop wearing those gray contacts. He looks too beautiful. Ethereal. "They're awesome."
Then have one with me, Jongin almost blurts. But damn his self control, because he replies, "You don't mean that."
Baekhyun snorts as an answer, and leans on Jongin's shoulder. He does it all the time, but feelings can be so stupid, Jongin realizes, because a flutter of butterflies still comes, sickening in his stomach. "I love you," Baekhyun mutters, and Jongin feels like throwing up. "You're always here for me."
I am, Jongin feels like screaming. Baekhyun is falling asleep on his shoulder, and he has no choice but to let him stay, almost in his embrace, almost his. He brushes Baekhyun's hair and cups his cheek, watching him breath steadily.
The phone call finally comes. "Yeah," he answers. "Sure, I'll wait."
Of course he waits, Jongin muses. It's been over seven years of waiting-happy with simply being Baekhyun's closest friend, not saying a word, until finally came Jongdae. He sings like an angel and his smile is so cute-Jongin remembers every time Baekhyun gushes, with sparkling eyes and a smile wider than Jongin could ever make him do. It's been four years, now, of cleaning up Baekhyun's mess, of fighting his fights with Jongdae for him, of picking him up drunk. Baekhyun breaks up with Jongdae every now and then, only to climb up his lap the day after, because it's always Jongdae for Baekhyun-always Jongdae and never Jongin.
"Hey, Jongin," Jongdae comes, panting, because he's sweet like that, leaving everything behind for Baekhyun the moment his anger subsides. Jongin looks up and Jongdae smiles apologetically. "Sorry, it was just something stupid," Jongdae mumbles, sitting across from Jongin.
Isn't it always, Jongin complains in his head. "Isn't it always," Jongin chuckles instead, wishing it doesn't sound fake.
Jongdae laughs lightly, and it's beautiful. The look, the sound-Jongdae is an angel. "Yeah," he comments, eyes trained on Baekhyun's sleeping figure. It's obvious just how much he loves Baekhyun, and Jongin feels his heart clench. "Baekhyun just never grows up."
And Jongin smiles, bitter and broken, because he knows that in a story where Baekhyun is Peter Pan, he can only be Tinker Bell and never his Wendy.
