people know when their SO has a friend that's just that and when they have one who's trying to replace them. It's the ones that are doing dirt that get all bent out of shape over things that aren't that serious. Even if you WERE trying to bring a dude down, why don't these guys have enough faith in their girl and the relationship between them to know it's not going down like that?

I agree 157% with this. Having been on both sides of that situation, I can say that your presence as the "cleanup guy" doesn't necessarily break people up...but it WILL expose new layers of the girl's relationship to her...if the dude feels threatened, it's because he KNOWS he's slacking and/or "gettin by"...so he has to make sure that at the end of the day he can say
