From the third floor it was amazing what sound carried. Sound like screaming. Fuck...people knew they shouldn't be out on their own right now.

He had his gun on his shoulder and was halfway down the staircase when he heard it again. Heard the scream coming from the direction of the TARDIS. Heard the scream of a voice he knew and a name he recognized.

"J-J-JAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!"

And without a thought he jumped over the railing, dropping less than ten feet and before he knew what he was doing, he was running. Breakneck speed, running into danger.

He had no doubt; that was Gwen and that was a voice of sheer terror. There was no time to think, only time to run and to hope he'd get there before she was nothing but...

That was not even something he'd entertain.

Before this, Gwen had thought she knew pain. Being shot is no picnic, after all, but when she feels the rip across her abdomen, it is so painful that she instantaneously wants to die just to end it.

She's screaming and kicking as she tries to get away, but she's aware of very little except the pain.

This, she thinks, is how I die. Not eaten by cannibals, not turned into a machine, not ripped apart by a weevil or even shot through the head. There was such irony in that.

It hurts, God it hurts, and Gwen's delirious, howling, covered in blood, desperate for it to stop and unable to get away.

His feet pound the ground, closing the distance as the jungle blurred past him. He didn't pay attention to anything but the anguished sounds coming from ahead. He didn't think or aim or take a second to think of himself, all he knew was Body and Blood and Dinosaur and Screaming and...

~BANG~

The M-16 was a glorious weapon. Not as good as the AR-15 or the AK-47, but the dinosaur's brains couldn't tell the difference. It fell heavily to the side and Jack raced in, standing over Gwen's body, scanning the brush for the others.

There were always others.

It all happens in a blink. One moment claws and teeth, the next Jack is above her. Seeing him, knowing he's there, it's far too much and Gwen sobs, but the motion sends a sharp jolt of pain through her chest, each breath increasingly difficult.

"You came," she rasps, barely audible, her face streaked with blood and tears.

"Be quiet," he said, his tone cold and commanding. He couldn't think about her hurting like that. Not now. Alive was good. Some sound was okay. But he needed to hear the jungle.

He listened, scanning the brush. Another shot and a solid thud hit the ground unseen. One second to look down at Gwen, Christ, she's going to bleed to death, one second was all it took. The jungle exploded as two more raptors rushed forward and Jack didn't bother to stp to consider ammo or shot palcement. He let go a semi-auto burst and they both fell, shrieking and writhing as the blood poured from them.

"Stay with me, Gwen Cooper."
