Chances are she knows you didn't mean it like that. My step-grandfather passed away this past weekend and I called in to work on Sunday, which meant my boss would have to work for me. He said, "okay, we'll straighten this all out and fix the schedule when you get back." What's to fix? I get three days off with pay in cases like these anyway, but I was only going to take one day because I was already scheduled off on Monday and Tuesday. I know he didn't mean to sound insensitive, so I'm not even going to bring it up when I go in today. The best thing to do is ask about her mother when she returns, let her know you were thinking of her, and leave it at that. I bet she won't even remember what you said before she left.
