Finding the perfect mate...

Out of curiousity, how does one go about finding the "perfect mate". Not necessarily for long term, but hopefully with the potential. Coming out of a marriage, again, leaves me to wonder how someone chooses someone that is compatible with them, and avoids the ending bitterness and resentment.
