[There is a very long drawn-out sigh with the sound of a cooing tribble being petted by nervous fingers in the background.] It's very hard to talk with the doctor about this. Very difficult indeed.

You didn't have to do that.

[ even though he approved of the way he announced it, there's still an edge of anger to his voice. ]

I know, I know---but I felt words had to be said, doctor.

I'm sorry she's gone, Doctor McCoy. If there is anything at all I can do...

Mr. Scott! [Kennedy's voice sounds a bit weak, but he's clearly smiling.] I'm sorry to hear about your friend. [It's said in a way that suggests he's glad to hear from Scotty all the same.]

Kennedy! [There is a mixture of relief and concern at that voice.]

Aye, it's a blow to be sure to have Emony sent home. Our house hasn't been the most pleasant of places since, as you can well imagine. But you sound horrible, man!

I'm not doing so badly. I'm much better than I was. The doctor won't leave... [That makes him trail off as he makes the connection. This Emony was Bones' friend. Maybe she was the elusive lady-friend he'd mentioned but never named. He hopes not. Either way, the doctor staying with him wasn't simply the stubborn choice of an overzealous physician.]

AH. So he's staying with you, then? [A revelation! Stubborn, McCoy!]

....Good. And your duel, Kennedy? McCoy was tight-lipped about that. So was Jack.

[Emil's own voice is quiet in response.]

Is Doctor McCoy all right?

Doctor McCoy, lad, is very much of the not-alright variety at this time.

[And he has no idea what to to do about it.]

When Ri-- when someone I really cared about was sent home, it helped to know that my other friends were still there. Maybe we should remind him of that.

Somehow I think it might just irritate the good doctor more, but I'm not against the idea, lad.
