Other Characters: Wichita, Tony Stark, Inara Serra
Character Name: Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott
Series: Star Trek XI
Age: 36
From When?: The end of the film
Inmate/Warden: Warden - Scotty probably doesn’t have a bad bone in his body. He may have occasional egocentric bones, but none of them are focused on any crime larger than proving he’s brilliant. (…or stealing a ship for his Captain, but details!)
Item: A 23rd century P.A.D.D.
Abilities/Powers: THE POWER OF THE MIND! No, but really. Scotty’s a genius, capable of performing ridiculous technological and mechanical feats, usually under pressure. Also, he can wear a red shirt and not die. This is very important.
Personality: Montgomery Scott is a jovial man with a sharp wit and a mind that doesn’t seem to quit. Surely a man with such exceptional talent and dedication to his trade would have a tough time relating to others, but Scotty has the gift of Scotland: social competence and charm. Scotty recognizes that there’s a place for engineer talk and there’s a place for sandwich talk, and participates enthusiastically in both without being too pretentious. Though sarcasm and comedy make up a good deal of his personality, his sense of duty to Starfleet isn’t lost in that. When the time comes to perform, he performs to the best of his abilities. When an emergency isn’t presenting an issue to be solved or Kirk hasn’t goaded him into a challenge, he has a fairly lackadaisical attitude.
It’s obvious that Scotty is a bit of an underachiever unless the moment calls for it. When his adrenaline is pumping and death is a hop, skip, and a jump away (Not speaking exclusively of his mortality, but including fellow crew members and civilians), he can perform amazing feats. However, when, for example, he’s stationed on Delta Vega, his desire to improve or work on any of its systems/facilities in his free time seems nonexistent. If there’s no challenge posed and nobody to witness his brilliance, his engineering genius can take a bit of a vacation. The canon provided to us so far makes it seem like Scotty takes challenges posed to him by fellow crew members of the Enterprise seriously, with a hint of pride and competition. Since he spent so much time on Delta Vega in near-solitary conditions, he’s had a bit of a hard time not spreading his wings and showing off to make up for lost time.
Scotty’s reaction to the Barge may have a tint of begrudging unhappiness when he realizes access to the engine room is completely off-limits, but would be quick to get to know his fellow Barge crewmembers and mingle. This is especially true if they’re familiar with engineering - old and new practices will always capture his attention.
History: As written by Simon Pegg, Scotty's early history:
"Montgomery Scott was born on March 3rd 2222, in Linlithgow, West Lothian. His parents eventually moved him and his brother Robert to Aberdeen, where his sister Clara was born. An exceptional student Scotty (or Mad Monty as his friends called him) was advanced forward several years in the educational system, meaning his intellectual peers were all at University age, whilst he was a mere 14. As a result, he spent much of his time crawling the pubs of Aberdeen with his friends, drinking and getting into fights about thermodynamics and quantum mechanics with men twice his size. At the age of 16, he came to the attention of professors at the Advanced Relativistic Physics Department at Glasgow University, after disproving the Prerera Theory (regarding photon torpedo detonation) and was transferred to study there for a year (where he really picked up the accent) before being accepted to Starfleet Academy on a scholarship. However he deferred his placement in favor of practical experience in space, working aboard mining ships and freighters, in particular the USS Deirdre, where he fell in love with engineering. Eventually he attended Starfleet and finished top of his graduating year, although the honor was later stripped due to disciplinary action taken against him due to "highly speculative and dangerous experiments with matter transfer"
Scotty’s history in Star Trek XI truly begins when Jim Kirk and Spock Prime make their way to his station on Delta Vega, which he was abruptly assigned to six months prior (In 2257). Though not confirmed, Scotty surmises the assignment was a punishment for testing transwarp beaming technology on the legendary Admiral Archer’s prized beagle. He was unable to procure the beagle after this experiment, and felt that the correspondence of the two events to be uncanny. He was accompanied on Delta Vega by his engineering assistant Keenser, who later becomes his assistant aboard the Enterprise. Keenser and Scotty’s relationship seems mostly tension-filled due to the shoddy location that is Delta Vega, but Keenser expresses sadness when Scotty beams about the Enterprise with Jim Kirk.
During Spock Prime’s short time with Scotty and Kirk on Delta Vega, Spock Prime provided him with the final equation to perfect transwarp beaming based on his idea that space, and not the objects/people themselves, were moving. While it’s suggested that he would’ve eventually perfected this equation on his own, Kirk needed to be warped aboard the Enterprise at that moment.
Scotty joined Kirk aboard the Enterprise, beaming into a tank of Inert Reactant and nearly drowning. Thanks to Kirk’s quick action, Scotty was spared the trial of death, but arrived soaking. He took this in stride, mostly due to his immense relief and excitement about being aboard the USS Enterprise. He performed admirably and to Kirk’s standards on his time aboard the USS Enterprise during the Battle of Earth, or more specifically, against Nero and the Narada. After saving the USS Enterprise from destruction in the wake of a black hole, he was promoted to Chief Engineer to replace Olson, who had died earlier in the film.
This idea was proposed by Mel and it was awesome, so I’m going to go with it. Scotty made a deal with the Admiral during the end of the film, asking him to assure that his detonation of the ship’s core would ensure the safety of all of those aboard. In return, he would provide his services aboard the Barge at a later date.
Sample Journal Entry: [5-10 Sentences]
The name’s Montgomery Scott, but I’m not too attached to it. Scotty suits me just fine, and I hope you’ll be sticking to that designation as well! Not that I’m not open to the idea of a new name entirely. It’d make things bloody complicated in the future, of course.
Scotty’s just fine, if you please!
Why would an upstanding Scotsman like me be here, in hell? Maybe I didn’t exactly know if collapsing the ship’s core was going to work or not. You can’t blame me for making a deal with the devil to guarantee the safety of her Majesty, the Lady Enterprise. Besides, I see the looks the Captain’s always giving her! I’d be a dead man if it hadn’t worked!
…well, I suppose I wouldn’t be the only one, and it solves a good lot of problems in the long run, that. Being dead seems like it’d solve all of my extrusive problems for the moment. Suppose this is just as good, eh?
As I understand it, this thing’s temporary. Who knew -- temporary hell? Brilliant!
Sample RP:
Scotty wasn’t completely foreign to the idea of time and space bending to the whim of some experienced power. He mulled this over in his head as he sauntered down the halls of the Barge, observing. In terms of space, it was certainly his to command in many aspects. Time he was a less acquainted with. The Barge hadn’t actually shattered any of his years schooling or his personal discoveries. The truth of it was that Scotty was fully willing to accept that the possibilities of both were endless. Wasn’t that why he joined Starfleet? To run himself ragged with discoveries until he couldn’t discover any more. Well, that, and to be with his one true love - the Enterprise.
He stopped in front of a large wooden door, examining it. It seemed a little old-timey to be on such an advanced spacecraft, but he knew the comfort some had in having something organic aboard. Not him, though. He didn’t want to take part in that sentimental state of mind in the slightest because his sentiments were usually more empathetic towards machinery. It wasn’t unkind or unfeeling - just misunderstood.
He swung the door open with ample curiosity and stood in awe of the sight before him. A beautiful pub with a counter and barstools and a bartender was laid before him clean and neat, just the way he liked it. It was a simple place with no explanation needed. There was no pretentious theme to it, and it was clear that this place was made for drinking. He made his way to a barstool and sat slowly, closing his eyes and letting out a sigh of happiness as he settled in.
He had picked up the notice of the bartender and gave him a slight wave before clasping his hands on top of the bar and scrutinizing the kegs below. Nothing struck him immediately, but he knew that was what the bartender was for. “Don’t s’pose you’ve managed to annex a good Scottish lager in one of your kegs, sir?” The bartender spoke from across the bar, cleaning bottles vigorously with a soiled towel, “We have a nice keg of Guinness, but I’m afraid that’s it.” Scotty frowned down at the kegs, unable to wrap his head around the idea that anyone would drink Guinness without first being inebriated.

Here’s my first dear_mun post, as well as a

Scotty's old history, as written by me:
A few of these details had to be borrowed from TOS, including his date of birth and enrollment in Starfleet.
Born in Linlithgow, Scotland, it’s become generally accepted that he grew up in Auberdeen. He began his career in Starfleet in 2241 at the age of 19. The bulk of his time was spent studying at Starfleet Academy and assisting in developing technologies, including transwarp beaming. Scotty also spent time aboard various small Starfleet vessels filling in for otherwise detained engineers. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander during this time, but doesn’t seek rank, duty, or fame. He loves his work as an engineer, and wants little else career-wise.
