Huh! My dad worked at JHUAPL for years (we lived just north of there, in Ellicott City). And I traveled up the midsection of Pennsylvania many times when I lived in Ithaca and near Rochester NY.
My favorite childhood memory of JHUAPL was an event where they had families come in to see media about the work there. I got to burn holes in wood with a CO2 laser, then watch a slow motion movie of an arc racing around a set of rectangular copper electrodes (the arc being used to heat air to test reentry vehicle heat shields.)
