re: the pdf links I posted: The top ten tips for getting into a juried exhibition in particular I found useful, just for basic tips on how to think of the work I do, the way I set up my own records of illuminations. I may have read it at just the right time, but it also influenced how I look at competing in A&S stuff in the SCA.

For the calligraphy...if there's a guild near you lectures it can be quite economical. Dues are $25/year. 1 guild with lectures/workshops/show-off-your-work meets monthly from Sept-May. The other has bi-monthly lectures/workshops from Sept-May. Both also offer more formal weekend workshops (Tim Botts, Carl Rohrs, etc come to town) at a reduced rate for members.
Also, my calligraphy classes through the community college are tax deductible since we itemize. Don't know if that helps you. Certainly there's the up-front cost, but it might help justify things in the future.
