I needed a new challenge, and I found one!

POWERLIFTING!

I'm super excited, anxious and nervous all at once.

I've had a couple of injuries (upper back region pinched nerve and strained hip-flexor) in the last 6 months or so that have limited the intensity of my back and leg workouts. Both are bearable right now and I'm just simply sick of babying them ( Read more... )

I keep hoping I'll get to the point where I can transition more toward "powerlifty" stuff. I'm just afraid I'll rip my spine in half as soon as I do anything serious :)

I understand. I just make sure I'm squared away and properly positioned when I lift now as opposed to jumpin into an exercise without double checking anything.

I know you have some back problems. You'd have to do a nice range of warm-up sets before you lift heavy....but you'd be alright ;)

What's your feeling on belts?

I've always avoided them assuming that my lower back should be strong enough to do any exercises without a belt for support, or I don't have any business doing that particular exercise yet.

Helpful, necessary, or crutch?

Well, I was never a fan of belts, gloves or grips. I compare it to having an injury and then taking pain pills to workout. I think some gear can give you a false sense of security and result in further injury. I do wear wrist guards occassionally but find them hanging out my pocket more often these days.

On the other hand, it seems because of the extreme weights in powerlifting that "gear" is necessary. They wear everything from belts and bench press shirts to full body support suits........SO...

I say no until the weights become "serious". I'm gonna find out more though from experienced lifters.
