POWERLIFTING!
I'm super excited, anxious and nervous all at once.
I've had a couple of injuries (upper back region pinched nerve and strained hip-flexor) in the last 6 months or so that have limited the intensity of my back and leg workouts. Both are bearable right now and I'm just simply sick of babying them

I know you have some back problems. You'd have to do a nice range of warm-up sets before you lift heavy....but you'd be alright ;)

I've always avoided them assuming that my lower back should be strong enough to do any exercises without a belt for support, or I don't have any business doing that particular exercise yet.
Helpful, necessary, or crutch?

On the other hand, it seems because of the extreme weights in powerlifting that "gear" is necessary. They wear everything from belts and bench press shirts to full body support suits........SO...
I say no until the weights become "serious". I'm gonna find out more though from experienced lifters.
