Long story. Basically, Kenshin's taken a vow like you have. He won't kill anyone, or let anyone be killed if he can help it. He tries to get through to people just like you're talking about, and if he can't, then he'll use his sword. It's a sakabatou, so it's designed to not kill. But man, it hurts like hell if you get hit by it.
