The accusation of witchcraft is a very old technique of social control. The community devises a 'crime' so beyond the pale that to merely be accused of it justifies ostracism, torture, and sometimes death. All societies have something akin to it. Not that it makes it any less horrifying.

The equivalent in the United States used to be homosexuality. Currently it is to accuse someone of pedophilia.

See, every time I hear someone bitch about how awful it is to live in the States I remind them that it could always get worse.

Doesn't let us off the hook, but let's not lose all perspective here.
