Xi'an: No Hua Shan, Hanging with Pedro

Yesterday I woke up too late for the bus to Hua Shan, so I went tea shopping instead. After tea shopping I ate dinner at the hostel and talked to a Brazilian-American guy named Pedro (pronounced "PAY-droo"), and we agreed to do Hua Shan together the next morning

Yeah, the infamous turn-yourself-white-with-our-miracle-rub ads. "美白" they call it, which literally means "beautiful white". If you flip through any Korean, Japanese, or Chinese women's magazines, you will find at least two or three of these full-page ads.

I actually knew someone who would refuse to wear shorts and short sleeves shirts in summer for fear of her skin "turning black" (變黑). Personally I think there are many racist cultural issues intertwined in this, but than again, that's another long spiny topic in itself...
