Personality: Hawke is complicated. Within the mechanics of the game, it is possible to pick from generally three responses in dialogue; a diplomatic/nice response, a sarcastic/playful response, and a blunt/stern response. All of these responses are facets of Hawke's personality. He is helpful, likes to end disagreements, and likes to fix situations but he may well do so with a sarcastic or blunt response out of the blue rather than doing so diplomatically. He says what he wants, when he wants to say it.
Being an apostate mage, Hawke believes in the freedom of mages, but not in the notion that all mages should be free of consequences. If a person does something wrong, they should be punished for doing such things, not get away from their responsibilities because they were once oppressed. In the same vein, Hawke does not believe in mages being caged within the Circle of Magi either. His father was a mage, as was his younger sister Bethany, until her death at the hands of an Ogre, and for all of Hawke's life his family fought to keep him and his sister free from the hands of the Templars who would have them locked away in the towers to be kept safe, and to keep the rest of Thedas safe from them. Because of this, Hawke greatly believes all deserve freedom, and he will fight hard for his freedom, refusing to deal with the idea of being caged.
A family man, Hawke is intent on making sure everyone around him is happy and safe, yet when his family is taken from him, one by one, he can all but stand by and watch as it happens, regardless of how hard he fights for them. His sister's death, his brother leaving to be a Grey Warden, and then his mother's death have all affected him greatly, making him rather a jaded and world weary person. He still tries to keep everyone else happy, he just avoids having to discuss his own feelings unless prompted to by his love interest, or perhaps by those closest to him.
Even so, Hawke is the kind of man who takes the best from every situation. When his home village, Lothering, was attacked and destroyed by the darkspawn, Hawke rallied his family together and set out for Kirkwall. Bethany's death weighed heavily but he continued on, and set about making sure his family was safe, neglecting his own hurt feelings over his younger sister to comfort all around him. He takes every situation as a chance for a new adventure and will take on any task given to him, if he thinks it's a good enough challenge, even going so far as to fight the Arishok of the Qunari in one on one combat, when the Qunari are a race far superior to Hawke's own race, Hume.
Hawke fights tooth and nail, and magically so, to restore the honour of his family and the ensure his mother is able to live a comfortable life in her older years, but even so that is a hard task without the friends he makes. He meets many people in Kirkwall, making lifelong friends of them all, and is willing to help their causes because he trusts and cares about them. Especially fond of certain friends, Hawke can sometimes say the wrong things unintentionally but he works hard to repair the damage quickly.
Hawke, all in all, is a strong, honourable man with a heart of gold and rather a silver tongue. If he has to repay a favour, he will, and he will protect any and all around him, so long as he can do so properly. He believes in freedom and honesty, he wants the best for everyone, and if he can fix a rift amongst people, he will. He is adventurous, determined, free-spirited, and a little bit cocky, with justifiable reasons. He knows what he wants and will get it, so long as he can do so by his own work and not off the back of someone else, even if he needs the support of those around him.

[The voice function comes on suddenly.] -Maker, this thing is just stupid. How is anyone supposed to-- oh. I think it migh--
Hello? [More buttons are pressed and Hawke smiles brightly at the screen.]
Yes, it seems to be working now. Is anyone able to hear me? Or see me, as it happens? I'd rather enjoy an explanation on just how I got here, I was in Kirkwall and then suddenly... wherever I am now. And it appears there is some sort of barrier blocking the use of my magic.
[He pauses then.] And I am going to pretend no Templars heard me say that. [He winces a little.]
Anders? Fenris? Isabela? ...oh Maker, Varric, Merrill? Aveline, come now, you'd at least respond.
......wait, this is a trick you've all concocted together, isn't it? Very clever. Now, perhaps come and meet with me and we will return to-- ah, we can't return to Kirkwall, can we? [He rubs at his beard in thought.] No, not after that last battle. A pity; I was rather enjoying being the Champion of Kirkwall.
[He drops his hand with a sigh.] Now, let's all meet and return to where it was we were headed, hm?
[It takes a moment but he cuts the feed.]
Third Person: There was a lot Hawke was scared of, though he never admitted it, only to himself. After all, the Champion of Kirkwall had to be brave for everyone's sake. He didn't get scared until he was alone and could sit and panic over the decisions he'd made or the mistakes he'd made. He was good at masking emotions to save himself the unwanted attention of people he really didn't want to see worrying, but that knowing look Fenris was giving him made him suspicious.
"I don't know why you're giving me that look, Fenris, but it really is getting rather annoying." The elf huffed and Hawke rolled his eyes, picking up the sturdy branch he had fashioned into a staff, even if he couldn't use his magic. And then it clicked and he looked back to the white haired warrior.
"Is that it? Because I can't harness my powers? Am I suddenly less worthy of following?"
"I would follow you anywhere," Fenris answered gruffly and Hawke sighed to himself, twisting his staff in his hand. He could fight without magic, it just meant him hitting things with his staff. He didn't quite hit as hard as Fenris did but he was no warrior after all.
Leading the way, Hawke pondered their situation. Fenris was no longer able to use the markings on his skin, he was no longer able to use his magic, and neither of them had their weapons of choice. Hawke was surprised he even got to keep his underwear, given all the things that had been taken away from him and Fenris.
Something about this place unsettled him to no end and he was still a bit lost when it came to getting around, but today he was leading Fenris out to the forest because for a change he needed to see wilderness, like the Wilds that had surrounded Lothering. He missed home, his real home, and even Kirkwall was missed some days, despite the dramatics and the ridiculous battles he was dragged into. Honestly, he was so sure he was down on his luck that he was contemplating his blood magic, and then paused as he remembered he couldn't even use that. Not that he ever enjoyed it. Blood magic was a last resort.
"Something troubles you, Hawke." Fenris broke the silence and the mage squinted down at him, almost annoyed he was so easily read. "We are in a foreign world not on Thedas. Yes, Fenris, something troubles me."
And Hawke winced inwardly, because he had once again let one of his more blunt responses slip, and as the elf scoffed and crossed his arms over his lithe chest, Hawke was sure he was in for a rather quiet day. He was used to the noise of at least two more people, usually those of whom never got along or did so noisily, but today it was just him and Fenris, and that would make for some rather quiet battles. If they did have battles to face.
