I still own the house that I lived in for 7 years during my decade in Spokane. It's rented by a couple that I have been friends with for years. Today my renter e-mailed me to tell me that our neighbor Sam had been found dead this morning, an apparent suicide. She said he'd been depressed recently after a breakup with his girlfriend

Sorry for your loss, Andy.

I think it is natural to try and imagine all the ways that you might have interceded, to theorize that changing your behavior would have prevented this outcome. No doubt his family, his former girlfriend, coworkers, etc. are all considering how they could have gone about preventing this.

But, I suspect from all you've said here that there was something deeper, more insidious, for Sam than just knowing he had a good friend (or friends) who cared that he was okay.

Mourn him. But don't beat yourself up.

Thanks buddy. I'm not really beating myself up, I'm just so devastated by the finality of it all. I can't help but think about the dark place he was in when he pulled the trigger. It's just gonna take some time to get past it.
