I opened up the news this morning on CNN and did a massive double take...

Iowa has legalized same-sex marriage!!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/03/iowa.same.sex/index.htmlHoly crap... a Midwest state has legalized same-sex marriage... Hopefully this gives the judges who are looking at Prop 8 something to think about. Do they really want to ( Read more... )

It's possible that the judges may note this legalization as a precedent, but I believe it's unlikely that Prop 8 will be overturned. The judges were pretty nasty to the anti-8's and pretty civil to the pro-8's during the hearings. :(

This is a case where I'd love to be proved wrong.

Actually, I was discussing this topic with David metacub before I read the news, and I wondered out loud if the justices wanted to give the impression that they were being hard on the No on 8 people so that when they decide to strike down Prop 8, that the people (ie. voters who voted for prop 8) think that they didn't just "bow to the gay agenda"... kinda like a red herring. I too am rather cynical about them striking it down, but hearing that Iowa has done so gives me hope that within my lifetime, we will see Federal same-sex marriage allowed.

I'm trying to be positive, but honestly, I think the only way out of this is for another long series of political and legal battles.

On the bright(er) side ... I think Prop 8 has woken up our community, which has been largely indifferent to politics over the past few years.

It's my believe that it's been so long since the last major political threat (think Lyndon LaRouche and subsequent anti-GLBT campaigns) that a large number of GLBT people have simply forgotten that we had to work our asses off twenty or thirty years ago to get the rights we have today.
