Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi - I liked how the first book had both her story and Iranian history...this one was more of just her biography. Still good, though.

Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools by Jonathan Kozol - Oh man. This book has me so fired up. I don't know what I'm going to do about it yet, but I ( Read more... )

Oh boy! I've been meaning to get into Chandler and Hammett. I (strangely enough) have a small-press roleplaying supplement about playing demon-summoning sorcerers. Hammett and Chandler are two of the biggest influences, so I keep meaning to pick 'em up.

Pick up some Chandler, definitely. But Hammett only if you have some extra time on your hands--I kept dozing off while reading him...

Oh oh! I'll definitely check them out -- the movies will no doubt go faster than this book did...

I know, right? Super exciting!

I have read all his books, all wonderful, the ones after Savage Inequalities should be read too..amazing. After reading Savage in the 90s I was moved to contact Jonathan and wrote to his publisher and got a card back from Jonathan. I asked him how I could get a box of quality books to the school in East St. Louis. He actually sent me the home phone number of the teacher from the book. When I called, the teacher was not exactly pleased that Jonathan had given out his home phone number. He sounded skeptical, like I was some white bleeding heart liberal who was going to clean out her throw away books and send them to him. But after he received two large boxes of new and other excellent diverse books I got a really nice thank you card from him...so anyway...read the rest of his books, lots has happened since he wrote Savage. I always cry when I read his books.

What an awesome thing for you to do! I feel all jittery and motivated to do something with this information. I might see if my local elementary school could use a volunteer (if they don't look cross-eyed at someone without kids attending their school)...

Apparently he recently hit on a bookstore friend of mine at a conference, but his questionable tact doesn't discount his findings. I'll definitely check out his other books.
