"Something's wrong."

He's so stubbornly sure, so persistant, that she doesn't know what to do or say. Here she was writing him off as a total loss in the emotional department and here he is knowing her and her moods better than she thought possible.

He puts his hand on her shoulder, frowning at her tenseness. "I'm right, aren't I?"

"Not exactly," she says, not exactly but maybe and could be and possibly sometime soon. She tries to relax under his hands, tries to look up at him with her usual smile, her laugh, tries to fool him. But he blurs away as tears cloud her eyes and she gives in, takes a step forward, hides her face against his shoulder while he wraps an awkward arm around her.

"It's okay," he soothes, "you can tell me what's wrong."

"How did you know?"

"Huh?"

"How did you know that I'm upset?"

He laughs, just a little, tightening his arm around her carefully since her tears die off a little at his attempt of comfort. "I could just tell. Your eyes... you looked sad, I don't know how to explain it."

So she tells him what's upsetting her, and he comforts and soothes and holds, and all the while she marvels quietly that he has the emotion, the sensitivity to be that way. She looks at him and realises he doesn't understand, but he tries, and whether he understands or not, he listens.

And she loves him so much for it.
