Anyone out there want to offer some advice on a computer? I'm basically debating between Lenovo (since engineers seem to like them) and Sony (since I have had one for 4.5 years without trouble

Since you played with lenovos at is&t I assume you know that you can get MIT discounts on some laptops -- I suspect you can still get that even though technically you're graduated.
I believe the X61 is what my dad has. If you want a chance to handle one and don't mind waiting till I get back next week, I can ask him and he'll probably be willing to show it off for you. (Looks like lenovo doesn't make my beloved (but 8lb) t43 anymore, boo.) The swivel seemed relatively sturdy to me but I haven't played with it that much.
How much do you really use the optical drive on your computer? I flip out about computers with no optical drive too so it is totally hypocritical of me to ask this but I will anyways.
One thing that would bug me but might not bug you: keyboard size.
Did you get the accidental damage warranty? They're pretty expensive from both Sony and Lenovo compared to the usual extended warranties that don't cover accidents. On one hand it would be nice to be protected, but on the other hand, I have never gotten accidental damage plans in the past (because they weren't offered back in the day) and have yet to drop a computer or whatever. Thoughts?
P.S. Thanks for being so helpful with this, I feel like I need to bounce ideas off of someone. I'm leaning toward Sony but I'm not really sure yet...
Also, because I like being annoying and beating topics to death: do you know if your dad's tablet experiences heating issues? I normally will plug my laptop into external monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc. and let it run literally all day long (as one would do with a desktop). I read about tablets having heating issues and am wondering if you can "fake-desktop" your tablet and run it for hours and hours?
Also, does he run vista by any chance? If so how does that go?
Dad's never mentioned it. That said, Dad is very on-the-move with his laptop: an hour on the commuter rail, a few hours in Noah's room while/after Noah goes to sleep, a couple hours downstairs, whatever -- so I'm not sure he'd have run into any continuous-use problems.
I'm pretty sure Dad runs Vista and likes it fine but I'll ask. (*I* liked Vista fine, and only partly because they were paying me...)
